However, there are significant challenges in the state\u2019s health sector, including health disparities, especially among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders; prevalent chronic conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes; behavioral and oral health issues; a rapidly aging population; and health workforce shortages.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> System<\/a>, through its 10 campuses, has many resources that can provide meaningful solutions to these challenges. <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> has strong programs in health sciences, nursing, medicine, public health, social work, pharmacy, dental hygiene, cancer research and more. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> also has numerous successful units and programs that address health in social sciences, education, engineering, law, business, agriculture\/nutrition and more.<\/p>\n<p>UHealthy <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is a new initiative to leverage <abbr>UH<\/abbr> programs to improve health and healthcare in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific. It is one of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>\u2019s top initiatives and is led by <strong>Aimee Grace<\/strong>, a pediatrician with significant federal policy experience.<\/p>\n<p>UHealthy <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> was forged through numerous listening sessions across the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System and focuses on four primary areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ensuring a robust statewide health workforce<\/strong><br \/>\nUtilize <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s strong health sciences programs and its faculty, staff, graduates, and students to address the state\u2019s healthcare and service needs to include a diverse workforce.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discovering and innovating to improve and extend lives<\/strong><br \/>\nBuild on <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s successful, culturally-sensitive research and innovation to improve the lives of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> multi-ethnic population, indigenous Pacific communities, and the increasingly multi-cultural population of the continental <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr><\/p>\n<p><strong>Promoting healthier families and communities<\/strong><br \/>\nChampion prevention and wellness activities, establish a Healthy Aging Initiative, tackle persistent health disparities, foster global health engagement, and promote social connections that support emotional wellness and resilience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advancing health in all policies<\/strong><br \/>\nDrive meaningful health policy and advance health in all policies, by applying <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s analytical and educational leadership. Address pressing health policy and economic issues in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, the Pacific and nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>The UHealthy <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> initiative has been focusing its early efforts on optimizing <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> health workforce. The UHealthy <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> team has been working with State Rep. John Mizuno and State Sen. Roz Baker on an upcoming legislative briefing on August 21, entitled &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"\u201cHawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> Health Workforce Development for the 21st Century.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The August 21 legislative briefing will feature national experts on health workforce; explore data and trends from the Healthcare Association of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\/Pacific Basin Area Health Education Center and the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Center for Nursing; and present details about the UHealthy <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> initiative. Presenters will also share potential solutions to optimize <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> health system, address shared workforce challenges and address workforce issues in various sectors (including entry-level health professions, nursing, medicine, social work, behavioral health and public health).
