Christian Gulbrandsen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Christian Lyder Gulbrandsen<\/strong>, retired dean and professor emeritus of medicine at the John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM<\/abbr>), died in his Waimea home on Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island on August 8. He was 80.<\/p>\n

Gulbrandsen helped transform learning at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa medical school from its traditional lecture-style curriculum to an active, hands-on, mentor-to-student and student-to-student style called “Problem-Based Learning.”<\/p>\n

He joined JABSOM<\/abbr> in 1971 and later became chair of medicine. He designed and led the Integrated Medical Residency Program. When Terence Rogers<\/strong> retired in 1988, UH<\/abbr> President Albert Simone<\/strong> appointed Gulbrandsen as Rogers\u2019 successor.<\/p>\n

“The Problem-Based Learning results have proven Dr.<\/abbr> Gulbrandsen\u2019s vision to be amazingly accurate in producing extremely competent and capable physicians throughout the state of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>,” said Benjamin Young<\/strong>, JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s former dean of students.<\/p>\n
