The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa Institute for Astronmy<\/a> (IfA<\/abbr>) is teaming up with the Hawaii Science and Technology Museum<\/a> (HSTM<\/abbr>) and Hilo students to launch a mini satellite, or CubeSat, into space. HSTM<\/abbr> was recently awarded the DREAM<\/abbr> Payload Program grant from Firefly Aerospace.<\/p>\n

Once deployed from Firefly\u2019s Alpha launch vehicle, the HSTM<\/abbr> CubeSat will collect the data for its four missions in science, art, engineering and education. “The main objective of our CubeSat mission is to bring more aerospace curriculum to the students of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island,” said Christian Wong, director of HSTM<\/abbr>. “We\u2019re actually going to space!”<\/p>\n

The satellite and electronics will be assembled at IfA<\/abbr>\u2019s “clean room” in Hilo, and subsequently transported to Vandenberg, California for launch in 2020. Clean rooms are specialized spaces where contaminants are kept to low levels for the manufacture or assembly of delicate equipment.<\/p>\n

“Having our local astronomy community right here in our own backyard is going to be invaluable to this mission,” said Wong. “Knowing that we can rely on their resources and expertise, particularly for the instrumentation and testing, is invaluable. There are so many benefits to being able to partner locally with world-class research institutions.”<\/p>\n

“We are thrilled to be involved in this project,” said Carolyn Kaichi<\/strong>, IfA<\/abbr> outreach and education specialist. “The astronomy community views education as a high priority, and we are more than willing to do what we can to share our knowledge and resources.”<\/p>\n

CubeSat is part of a new HSTM<\/abbr> aerospace program based out of Hilo Intermediate School, which will include creating lessons for distribution to other local schools, as well as forming a team to compete in the NASA<\/abbr> Student Launch Initiative for middle and high school students. Currently, there are 20 Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island students selected to form the Lava Tubes Rocketry Team.<\/p>\n

Electrical engineer Amber Imai-Hong, Wai\u0101kea High and UH<\/abbr> graduate, advises the group remotely from the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Flight Lab<\/a> based on the UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a> campus.<\/p>\n

HSTM<\/abbr> is looking for private and corporate donors to help cover the costs of the community aerospace program, estimated at approximately $50,000, which would include the expense of the CubeSat mission. HSTM<\/abbr> will be documenting their CubeSat build and launch through social media as well as on their website<\/a> (also @HawaiiScience<\/a> and @HawaiiScienceMuseum<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
