A student team placed 4th at the in the Associate Programs category at the International Residential Construction Management Competition in Orlando, Florida in early January. The team is comprised of architectural, engineering, CAD technology and construction management students.

The NAHB competition gives students the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to a real construction company by completing a management project/proposal. Proposals are submitted to a group of construction company executives who act as judges. During the convention, students defend their proposals to the judges in front of an audience. This competition is held in conjunction with the IBS.

All the work required in the competition was done on the students’ own time outside of class.

Second-year construction management student Allen Chon said that the competition was an unforgettable experience and enhances what is taught in the program while encouraging students to pursue new opportunities.

Home building professionals from around the world attended this year’s IBS—the biggest component of the annual Design and Construction Week®. The events drew more than 85,000 attendees.

“This competition has taught me endurance and has given me the experience I need in the construction field,” team member Rona Lapada said. “I recommend more students as well as our university to take a closer look into this competition and its requirements. It’s great to have represented our state as well as our school!”

“Though there were countless amounts of hardships, you gain an amazing amount of knowledge and skill sets you would not be able to get in a normal class setting. You form bonds with classmates that turn into deeper friendships and meet people who genuinely support what we are doing,” shared student Bruce An.

The (NAHB) student chapters program awarded Assistant Professor Norman Takeya the outstanding educator award in a ceremony held at the 2016 NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas in January.

Sponsored by , this prestigious award recognizes and encourages high quality standards in teaching construction education. Educators are recognized for their voluntary extracurricular activities, including those with construction industry organizations, as well as their construction experience and professional initiatives.

More than 100,000 builders, remodelers, students, faculty members and suppliers packed the aisles at the 2016 International Builders’ Show, Design and Construction Week.

“Congratulations to Professor Takeya” said Jerry Howard, CEO of NAHB. “Norman demonstrates a dedication to the field of teaching and helping students achieve their very best at Honolulu Community College.”

Students honored

In addition, two student teams from Honolulu Community College’s participated in the 2016 Residential Construction Management Competition sponsored by the NAHB student chapters.

A total of 53 teams for 2-year and 4-year colleges competed. In the 2-year college category, the Honolulu CC student teams came in 5th and 7th. Construction management student Emily Borium won the outstanding student award.

This competition is held in conjunction with the International Builders Show.

Industry professionals with BIA Âé¶¹´«Ã½, Castle and Cooke and Gentry Homes mentored the teams on a weekly basis to help them through the process.

Second semester Honolulu Community College student, Nicole Granciosa, recently won the surveyors challenge at the annual Surveying Conference held in January at the Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Prince Hotel.

The surveyor’s challenge is an annual conference competition and this year’s challenge was to figure out the height and area of the Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Prince Hotel ballroom foyer. Granciosa competed against experienced and licensed surveyors.

“I didn’t know what to think when I won. I was shocked,” exclaims Granciosa. “I was competing against surveyors with years of experience. Some of them have backgrounds in civil engineering or geodetic engineering. I’m nowhere near that, but it was a fun and an amazing experience. I’m learning from great teachers everyday.”

Assistant Professor Norman Takeya said, “Nicole is an example of the quality of instruction that our students receive here at . Our students can compete locally as well as at the national level and be successful.”

Honolulu Community College construction management students at the International National Association of Home Builders show

 

The (NAHB) Student Chapter at won third place in the two-year college category of the held at the 2015 NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas on January 22, 2015.

During the competition, students solve real-life construction management problems and present their solutions to a judging panel of residential construction industry experts. Fifty-four teams representing universities, community colleges, high schools and career technical schools across the U.S. participated in the annual competition.

The week prior, Honolulu CC received first place honors as the outstanding student chapter in the National Association of Home Builders awards ceremony on January 13 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Each year, chapters are recognized for their outstanding achievements in chapter and campus activities, community service projects, fundraising and other programs.

Honolulu CC student and NAHB chapter president Lana Moe was also recognized as an outstanding student at the awards ceremony. 

“Congratulations to the NAHB Student Chapter at Honolulu Community College,” said Jerry Howard, CEO of NAHB. “They and their competitors showed a great deal of talent, along with a depth of understanding of building industry management from land development to marketing to scheduling to estimating.”

“The NAHB student advisory board is proud that the RCMC has evolved into a prestigious event for the participants, their schools and the building industry,” said Bill Faulk, chairman of the two-year competition committee for the NAHB student chapters advisory board.

“Students will remember the competition for the rest of their lives. The judges were impressed with this year’s group, and we expect once again that the participants will be at the top of the heap when it comes to job offers,” Faulk said.

Honolulu CC’s Student Chapter members

received 1st place honors as the Outstanding Student Chapter in the (NAHB) awards ceremony on Tuesday, January 13 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Each year, chapters are recognized for their outstanding achievements in chapter and campus activities, community service projects, fundraising and other programs.

“The construction management students deserve this award,” shares Norman Takeya, assistant professor of the program at Honolulu CC. “They have worked hard in a number of community service projects along with their volunteer work with the . They are an awesome bunch of students who do a great job representing the college.”

The student chapter helped with various community service events throughout the year such as the sustainable tire wall at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden which created more available planting space. They also volunteered at the in January and the 2014 in September. In March 2014, the students were able to put together two groups of students to compete in the BIA Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Stew Challenge.

“This has been an amazing honor for the NAHB Student Chapter at Honolulu Community College. Much appreciation goes out to our advisor, Mr. Takeya for pushing us to succeed in our career choice of becoming construction managers and to our local NAHB Chapter, BIA Âé¶¹´«Ã½ for being a great support to all of our endeavors,” says Lalana Moe, Honolulu CC construction management student and chapter president.

The National Association of Home Builders Student Chapter at was recognized with the Rookie of the Year Award in the Two-Year College category of the held at the 2013 NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas in January.

More than 50 teams representing universities, community colleges, high schools and career technical schools across the United States participated in the annual competition, in which students solve real-life construction management problems and present their solutions to a judging panel of residential construction industry experts.

“Our students worked hard on this project. It was difficult, it required hours of work after classes and these are only first year students in the program,” said Norman Takeya, assistant professor in the at Honolulu Community College. “This was an outstanding accomplishment for our students.”

For the two-year competition, student teams submitted a full set of working drawings for a house, a detailed materials estimate, and a complete construction schedule for their specific plan. Teams also completed the basement layout and provided at least two value engineering suggestions as part of their proposals.
