The placed in the top 2.5% out of more than 20,000 universities worldwide in the released on May 15.

The flagship campus of the 10-campus UH System placed No. 505 out of 20,531 universities ranked. In the U.S. rankings, UH ²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹ came in No. 137.

According to the Center for World University Rankings, objective indicators were used for its four key pillars in the methodology (education, employability, faculty and research) with no reliance on surveys and university data submissions. In addition, equal emphasis was put on student-related and faculty-related indicators, and 62-million outcome-based data points were used.

“These rankings cap off a series of recently-released rankings that demonstrate UH ²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹¡¯s excellence in academic programs and research,” UH ²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹ Provost Michael Bruno said. “Our state can take pride knowing that one of the top universities in the world is located right here in Âé¶¹´«Ã½.”

The Center for World University Rankings used seven objective and outcome-based indicators grouped into four areas to rank the world¡¯s universities:

Education: based on the academic success of a university¡¯s alumni, and measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have received top academic distinctions relative to the university’s size (25%)

Employability: based on the professional success of a university¡¯s alumni, and measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have held top company positions relative to the university’s size (25%)

Faculty: measured by the number of faculty members who have received top academic distinctions (10%)

Research:

  • Research output: measured by the total number of research articles (10%)
  • High-quality publications: measured by the number of research articles appearing in top-tier journals (10%)
  • Influence: measured by the number of research articles appearing in highly-influential journals (10%)
  • Citations: measured by the number of highly-cited research articles (10%)

Recent recognition

Not only is UH ²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹ routinely highly ranked by the most prestigious higher education ranking entities, it also provides a good return on investment, according to the U.S. Department of Education¡¯s . UH ²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹ is above the national median for four-year schools in graduation rate (63% vs. 58%) and earnings ($56,055 vs. $50,391), and below the national median in average annual cost for in-state students ($13,430 vs. $18,902).

According to the 2023 best university rankings by , more than 115 UH ²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹ researchers have been recognized for being among the world¡¯s top scientists in multiple fields, including Earth science, ecology and evolution, environmental science, chemistry and more. UH ²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹ as a whole ranked in the nation¡¯s top 30 in three subjects (Earth science No. 11, environmental sciences No. 21 and ecology and evolution No. 30), while several researchers ranked in the nation¡¯s top 100 in their respective fields.
