About 150 high school counselors from across the state were immersed in the depth and breadth of educational opportunities at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½ at ²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹ through a workshop in September.
“²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹ is an excellent choice for students because of the variety of programs that they offer,” said Kamehameha Schools Kap¨¡lama College Counselor Steve Morales.“The undergraduate degrees from accounting all the way to zoology. The pre-professional programs. It just is right for any student within the State of Â鶹´«Ã½.”
Mililani High School College and Career Counselor Denise Yamamoto agreed. “I feel UH ²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹ is a great choice for my students, because it?s kind of like the gem in our backyard,” she said. “It gives students a variety of options in majors that they find interesting (and) they want to pursue.”
UH ²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹ is consistently ranked among the world’s best research universities, and is one of only 115 Research 1 institutions in the country.
David Lassner, UH president and interim UH ²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹ chancellor, said, “The opportunities that we offer to students to engage in meaningful research that touches Â鶹´«Ã½ around oceans, around astronomy around health, around the environment, around our social problems¡ªthey won?t get those experiences anywhere else.”
Mililani High?s Yamamoto can attest to that. “Students have come back to me after being here for a year. And they come and they say they can?t believe the opportunities that they have been provided, whether it’s internships or working closely with professors,” she said.
UH ²Ñ¨¡²Ô´Ç²¹’s in-state tuition is $2,723 less than the national average for public universities, and more than $102 million in scholarships was awarded to 8,956 undergraduate students over the 2015–16 academic year.
“Of course a top selling point would be the price,” added Morales. “You get a quality education at a really good price.”
