I’m so sorry to learn of your diagnosis and upcoming treatment for prostate cancer. I recently underwent treatment for prostate cancer myself (2015) and would like to share my experience with you if I might.

When I was diagnosed, my doctors presented me with several options for treatment: robotic surgery, brachytherapy (radioactive seeds), radiation therapy. Having worked as an x-ray scientist in my profession, I was very concerned of the permanent side effects of radiation treatments. I was also aware of the permanent side effects of surgery from my brother who had undergone a radical prostatectomy. I decided to research the proposed treatments in detail to assess the chances of success, risks and long term side effects of each treatment. Shortly into my research I learned of an alternative treatment which is often overlooked by doctors prescribing treatments for prostate cancer. The treatment is called “proton treatment” and has been performed at Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) since 1990 with a very high rate of success and none of the side effects of other treatments.

There is a wonderful book called “You Can Beat Prostate Cancer and You Don’t Need Surgery to Do It” by a former patient, Robert Marckini (available on Amazon). It’s an easy read and explains in simple terms everything you need to know about undergoing treatment. Things the doctors don’t tell you! After reading it (in 2 days!)I made my decision! I contacted LLUMC, was admitted to their treatment program and within one month started my treatment. It was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life, leaving me with many great memories and friends.

I hope this information is useful I and encourage you to check out proton treatment and just don’t listen to doctors before doing your own research. Whatever treatment you choose, I hope it goes well, you are cancer free and able to continue the tremendous job of coaching you have done so well at UH.

Blessings and Christmas Wishes to you and your family!

P.S. If you wish to discuss any of the above with me, feel free to call, I live on Hawaii Island, Kailua-Kona.

After treatment (15 months ago), I am pleased to report I am cancer free, my PSA (1 year since completing treatment) is 0.3 and I have experienced no side effects.
