Professor E. Gordon Grau, director of the University of Â鶹´«Ã½ , has been named interim director of the .
Grau is a Maryland native who has lived in Â鶹´«Ã½ for more than 35 years. During his tenure as director, he positioned UH Sea Grant at the forefront of the 33 Sea Grant programs nationwide by organizing the program around the theme of coastal communities and economies.
Through Sea Grant and now the Water Resources Research Center, Grau is working to advance coastal communities that are economically prosperous, socially and culturally inclusive, and which have the smallest environmental footprint.
“Water is life. I am not the first person to say this, but it is the basis for all living systems on earth and yet something we take for granted,” said Said Grau. “Throughout the world, and in Â鶹´«Ã½ in particular, water is a finite resource that we must conserve and protect if we are to sustain life as we know it.”
Water Resources Research Center
The Water Resources Research Center concentrates on addressing the unique water and wastewater management problems facing people in the Pacific. It serves the State of Â鶹´«Ã½ as well as other Pacific islands and elsewhere by researching water-related issues distinctive to these areas.
The main focuses of the center are to coordinate and conduct research to identify, characterize and quantify water-related problems in Â鶹´«Ã½ assist Pacific Island and Asian governments facing water problems similar to those in Â鶹´«Ã½ and facilitate access to interdisciplinary expertise within the university to enhance understanding of environmental problems and to identify effective solutions.
