Dear former student– I’m sorry, I don’t quite understand your objection? We acknowledged and addressed the initial suggestion, then came up with an even cleaner solution based in part on the feedback, which is always welcome.

Now, if you are seeing Hawai’i with a non-letter character in it, that is actually a technical issue having to do with proper browser display of the ‘okina, or glottal stop. If that is the case, may I ask what browser you are using to view our site?

Mahalo for taking the time to comment.

Shame.

Maybe if you contact the campus office where you registered for graduation they could help you? Otherwise, maybe ask a friend to grab you a copy? Congrats on your graduation!

Please advise.

Thanks.

Thank you for your comment, David. We discussed your suggestion and did shorten the headline after some new editorial input.

Generally speaking however, headlines are not beholden to the same grammatical rules as sentences. We stand by “University of Hawaii holds fall commencement ceremonies” because it is active voice and shorter than future tense verb forms, i.e. will hold, to hold, will be holding, etc. But the meaning is still conveyed with reasonable accuracy.

Thanks again for your input, we love to talk about grammar and style. Happy travels!

I am sitting in Auckland NZ and read your headline and think I missed the hooding of my student.

Please talk to the English department about tenses.
