{"id":2229,"date":"2015-03-03T12:36:10","date_gmt":"2015-03-03T22:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/lis\/?p=2229"},"modified":"2025-07-05T21:01:07","modified_gmt":"2025-07-06T07:01:07","slug":"library-services-for-youth-in-custody","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/lis\/library-services-for-youth-in-custody\/","title":{"rendered":"Library Services for Youth in Custody"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Hawai\u02bbi\u00a0LIS Program is pleased to offer a new online course in summer 2015, LIS 693:\u00a0Library Services for Youth in Custody.<\/p>\n<p>Students in this course will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Understand the information needs of youth in custody<\/li>\n<li>Understand current trends in Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) librarianship<\/li>\n<li>Contextualize services to youth in custody within frameworks of juvenile justice and social justice<\/li>\n<li>Identify books and library materials that could support a juvenile detention center library<\/li>\n<li>Analyze local, regional, state, national, and global differences as regards to juvenile justice policy and its relation to library services<\/li>\n<li>Analyze existing library services for youth in custody in regards to collections, policies, programs, justice frameworks, intellectual freedom, outreach, and issues of inequality (e.g., gender, race, class, sexuality, nationality, dis\/ability)<\/li>\n<li>Understand similarities and differences between youth services and adult services in custody settings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The instructor, Joe Coyle, has several years experience as a JDC librarian and recently served as Project Coordinator for <a href=\"https:\/\/mixituplis.wordpress.com\/\">Mix IT Up!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Visiting students are welcome. This 3-credit asynchronous online graduate course is offered from May 26-July 2. Tuition is $1,650.00 for in-state and out-of-state students.
