CPT must be an integral part of an established curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>ISS authorizes all CPT, and applications should be submitted well in advance of employment start dates for timely processing. Employment may not begin until authorization is given. Authorization is shown on a print-out of page 2 of a student's I-20.<br \/>\n<a class=\"cpt-limitations anchor\" name=\"cpt-limitations\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>CPT applications can be found and submitted through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/issmanoa\/?page_id=14548\">ISS Request<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Eligibility Requirements<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Not available for students in English language training programs<\/li>\n<li>Limited to college, university, conservatory, or seminary students<\/li>\n<li>May be granted for part-time (20 hours per week or less) or full-time employment (20 hours per week or more)<\/li>\n<li>Must have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis in a SEVIS-approved school for one full academic year to be eligible\n<ul>\n<li>Exceptions provided for graduate students who are required to engage in curricular practical training prior to completion of a first year of studies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>CPT Limitations<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Work must be directly related to and commensurate with the level of the student's course of study<\/li>\n<li>Part-time only during academic semesters, unless it can be academically justified<\/li>\n<li>A cumulative of 12 months of full-time CPT will disqualify a student from OPT<\/li>\n<li>May be full-time during vacation periods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"cpt-types anchor\" name=\"cpt-types\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Primary Types of CPT Authorized by ISS<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Required CPT: a compulsory internship\/field practicum to fulfill degree requirements. It may a specific course or training.<\/li>\n<li>Elective CPT: a course that is credited to the requirements for a student\u02bbs degree. It may be an internship or practicum course within the field of study. This work permission is typically limited to the semester the student is enrolled in the course requiring the employment.<\/li>\n<li>Â鶹´«Ã½Cooperative Education: employment with special restrictions offered through the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/careercenter\/\">M\u0101noa Career Center<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>CPT Requirements: Compensation Is Not the Key Factor<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under U.S. federal regulations, whether a training opportunity is paid or unpaid does <\/span><b>not<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> determine the need for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorization. What matters is whether the training is an <\/span><b>integral part of the student\u2019s academic program<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and directly related to their <\/span><b>major field of study<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CPT authorization is required for any off-campus training\u2014such as internships, practicums, or cooperative education\u2014that meets these criteria, <\/span><b>regardless<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of compensation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-2166-0-0-2\" class=\"so-panel widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Curricular practical training is an alternate work\/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum which [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"parent":8476,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2166","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry","post"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.1.1 -
