PURPOSE: The International Undergraduate Student Scholarship (IUSS) encourages the recruitment and retention of high-achieving international undergraduate degree-seeking students at Âé¶¹´«Ã½M¨¡noa and serves the strategic and diversity goals of the university.
New Undergraduate F-1 Students (Freshman and Transfer)
No application is required. This award is for fall admission only. Students are automatically considered with their admission application. Priority given to students who applied for and receive admission earlier.
- New students entering for the first time in the spring semester will be considered on a wait-list for the award for the following fall semester. Contact the ISS Scholarship Coordinator to request to be on the wait-list.
- This award is not available to continuing students.
Eligibility
Eligibility
- Open to new Âé¶¹´«Ã½M¨¡noa undergraduate students (first year or transfer) who hold or will hold F-1 visa status.
- New transfer/freshmen must submit an and be accepted in order to be considered.
- Minimum 3.0 Cumulative GPA, verified by UHM Undergraduate Admissions. Eligible students will be recommended to ISS by the Admissions Office.
- Awards are limited and not guaranteed even if criteria are met.
Not Eligible
- Second bachelor's degree applicants and non-degree students (for example, students from other schools here on exchange programs) are NOT eligible.
- If you receive a Resident Tuition rate, the International Merit Award Scholarship (IMAS) or M¨¡noa International Excellence Scholarship (MIES), you are not eligible for the IUSS.
Award
- $10,000 per academic year ($5,000 per semester, fall and spring), renewable based on continuing eligibility
- Applied to Âé¶¹´«Ã½M¨¡noa tuition and fees only
- Cannot be applied to courses at other Âé¶¹´«Ã½campuses and UHM Extension courses
- May not be used if receiving a Resident Tuition rate, International Merit Award Scholarship (IMAS) or M¨¡noa International Excellence Scholarship (MIES).
Terms of Award
- The IUSS is given for an academic year, starting in fall only.
- The recipient's class level will be verified at the beginning of the their first fall semester. Class level is based on the total number of credits toward graduation (not the number of credits needed for a specific major). With this information, the recipient will be eligible for annual renewals according to the following chart.

- Any extensions of the award beyond the time limits are at the discretion of the ISS Office.
- The recipient must enroll full-time each semester of the award (minimum: 12 credits), unless they receive authorization from ISS to enroll below full-time.
- Renewals are based on the recipient maintaining a cumulative GPA? of 3.0 after each spring semester.
