id=\"what-is-the-fcc-national-broadband-map\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the FCC National Broadband Map?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The FCC National Broadband Map is meant to reflect all the locations where the Internet can be installed in the USA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The FCC Broadband Map also provides information on which Internet technologies are available to locations by Internet service providers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The FCC Broadband Map is where people can input corrections to information on the FCC\u2019s map.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 id=\"why-use-the-fcc-broadband-map\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why use the FCC Broadband Map?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simply put: you deserve access to high-speed and reliable internet. Having the FCC Broadband Map accurately reflect your current internet situation will enable the University of Hawaii to better identify locations needing internet access and eventually build infrastructure for those locations in need. You can be a part of helping the State of Hawaii to bridge the digital divide and bring high-speed Internet to all people of Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 id=\"before-you-start-using-the-map\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before you start using the Map<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you start, it is important to understand some terms found on the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"broadband-type\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Broadband Type<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fixed Broadband<\/strong> &#8211; Internet that comes via technologies such as cable, fiber, or copper<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mobile Broadband<\/strong> &#8211; Internet that comes via cell phone technologies such as 3G, 4G, or 5G<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mass-market Broadband<\/strong> &#8211; Internet that is commercially available through an Internet service provider such as, but not limited to, Hawaiian Telcom or Spectrum<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"broadband-status\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Broadband <strong>Status<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Served &#8211; <\/strong>This status means that <strong>for the technologies and speed in your current selection on the broadband map<\/strong>, there is one or more Internet service provider that is able to provide your selected technologies and at the selected speeds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, a \u201cserved\u201d status indicates you have access to the selected technologies and speeds<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Not Served &#8211; <\/strong>This means that <strong>for the technologies and speed in your current selection on the broadband map<\/strong>, no Internet service providers can provide your selected technologies and the selected speeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, a \u201cnot served\u201d status indicates you do not have access to the selected technologies and speeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"building-type-the-category-that-best-describes-how-the-building-is-used\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Building Type<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The category that best describes how the building is used<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Community Anchor Institution<\/strong> <strong>(CAI)<\/strong> &#8211; An entity such as a school, library, health clinic, health center, hospital or medical provider, public safety entity, institution of higher education, public housing organization, or community support organization that facilitates the greater use of broadband service by vulnerable populations, including, but not limited to, low-income individuals, unemployed, children, the incarcerated, and aged individuals [60 years and above]. <a href=\"https:\/\/broadbandusa.ntia.doc.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-09\/BEAD-Frequently-Asked-Questions-%28FAQs%29_Version-2.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NTIA FAQ Document Link (Scroll to Section 1.7)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, a community anchor institution is a location that is generally considered a public institution, such as a public school, public library, police station, fire station, hospital, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Group Quarters (GQ) &#8211; <\/strong>Group quarters are defined as places where people live or stay in a group living arrangement owned or managed by an organization providing housing and\/or services for the residents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GQs differ from typical household living arrangements because the people living in them are usually not related to one another. GQs include such places as college residence halls, residential treatment centers, skilled nursing facilities, group homes, military barracks, prisons, and worker dormitories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/blogs\/random-samplings\/2021\/03\/2020-census-group-quarters.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/blogs\/random-samplings\/2021\/03\/2020-census-group-quarters.html<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Enterprise<\/strong> &#8211; Larger business with many locations and a private phone network<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Unit Count <\/strong>&#8211; The estimated&nbsp;number of&nbsp;unit(s) within the location. In the case of Community Anchor Institutions and Group Quarters, the unit count is the count of CAI or Group Quarters units in the structure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Provider<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Internet Service Provider<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Charter Communications Inc. = Spectrum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cincinnati Bell Inc. = Hawaiian Telcom<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hawaii Dialogix Telecom LLC = Xiber Hawaii<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hughes Network Systems LLC = HughesNet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NetFortris Acquisition Co., Inc. = NetFortris<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Space Exploration Technologies Corp. = SpaceX Starlink<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"internet-speed\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Internet Speed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/ndkoO9OaeiezVgL5XzUcLRE_yryU1jbYRL7EZODyBBQAYu3pkskb8vZPNvZmeaQGuDyysYtLriu5VMIIXhXmXbz2rYdUPptPm-9ZsfD-DgAP3YzbfbwcynF4YDeWFwZFHGTMeurfyxP90qyzgsrXBQY\" alt=\"broadband speeds image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Down<\/strong> &#8211; download speed. Download is when you are receiving data. This is the maximum advertised download speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Up<\/strong> &#8211; upload speed. Upload is when you are sending data. This is the maximum advertised upload speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mbps<\/strong> &#8211; megabits per second. The speed at which data is transmitted. The higher the number, the faster the speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 id=\"how-to-determine-your-broadband-status-with-the-fcc-map\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to determine your broadband status with the FCC Map<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/broadbandmap.fcc.gov\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/broadbandmap.fcc.gov\/home (Link opens in a new tab)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. Start typing your address into the search bar. As you type, your address may appear in the drop-down. On the right side of the screen, next to \u201cStatus,\u201d note the building type. Use the map filter settings to determine if your location is serviceable by certain technologies. For BEAD eligibility, select &#8220;Cable\/Fiber&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check that the dropdown matches the building type.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the &#8220;Technologies&#8221; buttons to select the technology to filter. You should now see the status of the address reflect the technology and speed selected. Your location would be considered for broadband infrastructure construction.
